Week 3, Thursday: Waver
[Wednesday happened a lot. So much so that it's hard to believe that only a few hours passed back in the castle.
On Thursday, an owl finds Waver to deliver a few pages bound together. A brief note at the beginning: I wrote that story I promised you. -Dazai
It's a brief story about an angel, with four loving parents. She knew they didn't always know what they were doing, and they made mistakes too, but they always had her happiness in mind and raised her as best they could. While she missed them dearly, she knew they would be proud of her for using the lessons they taught her to help other people.
As an angel, she watched over people who were hurting, to give them her blessing and inspire them to seek happiness. Her parents had taught her that nothing was hopeless, even in the darkest of places.
And there were none she watched over more lovingly than her own parents, willing them to keep up their spirits as they'd lifted hers.
Dazai can be found still in the owlery, petting one of the birds.]

but when he reads it, waver can't help but laugh to himself. it's...a touching story. not something that waver would have originally considered interesting, but with the situation they had gotten out of on wednesday...
he figures that he should at least send dazai a message back with a thank you, so he heads to the owlery.
but he didn't expect dazai to be there already. taken aback for a second, waver wonders if he should just turn away and come back when dazai's gone. but before he can even decide, he's already speaking. ]
Thanks for the story.

Dazai looks up when Waver enters, expression tinged with sadness despite his attempt to keep it neutral.]
You're welcome. ...I thought it was appropriate.

but waver doesn't know what to do for comfort. so he sighs. ]
Indeed. [ a pause ] It is never easy to let go of someone.

...If there's a 'Dazai' in heaven, which I highly doubt, he won't know her. The Dazai that took care of her for eight years is just a copy.
[So even if the remotest possibility exists for Waver and Eichi and Rebecca to be reunited with their daughter - Dazai will never see her again.]

so it's not that which concerns him. ]
Do you believe that makes you inferior to the 'real' Osamu Dazai?
no subject
...Just. I don't want to think about her finding her 'Papa' and then being crushed when he doesn't recognize her.
[He's thought too much about his relationship to his own parents to believe that wouldn't wound any child.]
no subject
[ it's not just an empty attempt at cheering dazai up. he takes into consideration the way that time passed in that world, and how different things were in general... ]
Angels are beings different than you or I. So I believe...that she must know who her real 'Papa' is.
no subject
...I won't see her again.
[That's undeniable. When he ceases to exist, whether it's here or in his own world, he won't find her.]
no subject
then he nods ]
Yeah. Maybe none of us will. [ he sighs ] That's why we have to cherish those memories for as long as possible.

[He still doesn't get along with Waver about half the time, even when Dazai's trying his best. But their daughter would be sad.]

I know. I know, just... never mind.

Listen. I can't promise you that I won't die or that you won't die either. All we can do is our best...as little as that might seem.

[He'd promised Sharpay to survive, but Sharpay wouldn't know if he survived or not. He can't let her down.]
